Plan Before Starting Your Decking Project

November 9, 2021

Do you love to DIY? We don’t blame you. There’s a lot of satisfaction to gain in a job well done. You’ve taken measurements, cut your own timber, taken a well-earned breather and then finally completed the job.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. If you’re considering building some decking, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind first. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Choose Your Materials

To start with, you’re going to need to choose a material to work with. Of course, we recommend timber over composite materials. If you’re still uncertain about why to use timber decking, check out this handy blog. Once you’ve chosen your material, it’s time to move onto the next aspect of planning.

Why Do You Want a Deck?

You’ll also have to consider the purpose of your deck. Will it be purely for entertaining, or will it be for dining? Maybe you want a mixture of both?

You could install a deck with privacy in mind or to surround your pool or spa. The reason for your deck will inform everything else. After all, form follows function.

Permits and Applications?

Some local councils need you to apply for a permit before any construction, renovation or extension of your property. Before you get ready to build your deck, give them a call. If you do need to apply for a permit, make sure that you tick all the necessary boxes. This will save a headache further down the line.

Location, Location, Location

Real estate’s not the only place where this is important. Exactly where you plan to build your decking timber is going to factor into your decision. Do you want it attached to the first or second storey of your home? Do you want a freestanding deck? What about your fencing? You may need some fencing supplies too. You’ll have to consider all this before picking up your tools.

Handrails or Freestanding?

If you want handrails for your decking, then you may need to invest in some custom ones. The other option is to go freestanding. If you have children then handrails may be a wise investment, especially if there’s a drop.

Foundation

The foundation or base of your deck is extremely important. The depth of your footings is going to depend on your location. After all, we build things from the ground up.

Budget

Finally, your budget will play a large part in your decisions. It will determine what quality materials you use, what tools you need, and how large your deck will be. Remember, cheaper isn’t always better.
