2017 Trends That Will Leave You Floored

10 April 2017

A new year means new home decor trends that we are very excited about. In this article, we’ll go through some of the best and most eye-catching wood flooring trends on the market today to give you some inspiration for your home makeover. Now, you may be wondering how much more interesting the same old wood flooring can get. But trust us. With a bit of imagination and style, these trends will leave you absolutely floored.

Stains We Love – Dark, Blonde and Grey

Traditional, typical, predictable wood flooring is out. Exploring the colour spectrum is in. Homeowners are adopting bold yet classic colour stains for their wood floors in 2017.

The dark stain is really making a statement this year, especially when the dark stained floor is thoughtfully contrasted with bright white furniture. Many homeowners are choosing to start with a darker and more dramatic wood type, like Merbau (Kwila), due to its robust natural deep brown, almost red, hue.

On the other side of the spectrum is the super light, blonde wood floors. Especially in contemporary homes, this stain is used to make a space look bigger, brighter and more open. Start with a light-coloured wood like kiln dried pine to get a natural blonde look.

Right in the middle is grey, a calming colour that is quickly gaining popularity in the modern household. Many homeowners are coupling a grey stain with matching grey furniture in different shades.

Have a Hand in the Texture

Getting lucky with a nice wood grain is great, but you can create the texture you want as well. Hand scraping is a great technique to give your floors a rustic, natural look that leaves your home looking rare and classic. Wire-brushed wood floors look aged and distressed in a charming way. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing (and kind of cool looking), but these types of wood floor are great at hiding new scratches and dirt. This is especially useful if you have small children and pets running around.

Un-Glossy Finishes

Say goodbye to shiny, light-reflecting wooden floors and say hello to something a bit more subtle and tasteful. If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge to a flat finish, you might want to start with a satin finish (only 40% lustrous). This is a classic finish that probably won’t go out of style since it’s so middle-of-the-road.

However, if you really want to make a statement and embrace 2017, then a matte finish might be perfect. Matte finishes give your home a rural and rustic look that embraces the warmth of the wood nearly as it is, without any additional makeup.

Creative Layout Patterns

2017 brings in some oldies but goodies in terms of layout trends. While many seem dated, in the right atmosphere and with the right decor, they can seriously enhance your home.

For example, the old Herringbone design is making a comeback with a twist. What’s the difference? Try using longer planks to add depth to the eye.

Straight wood flooring is also taking a turn, or rather, an angle. Many homeowners are laying wood flooring at an angle to give the home a unique, modern look. Others are choosing wide planks to give their homes a more open and elegant feel.
